New Haven vows to fight over its “sanctuary” status

New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — During his first 100 days in office, President-elect Trump stipulates that he wants to block all federal funding to so-called sanctuary cities. New Haven city attorneys are preparing.

“If in fact it is done by executive fiat, then we are going to fight it,” said New Haven Mayor Toni Harp.

In 2007, New Haven gained national attention as the first place to offer city ID cards to any resident, undocumented or not. Justin Fappiano is an immigration attorney, and said while there is no legal definition for sanctuary city, places like New Haven don’t ask about immigration status for practical reasons, like building trust with immigrants and creating dialogue with communities to help with issues like fighting crime.

“New Haven Police Department needs to maintain good relations and trust with immigrant community here,” Fappiano said.

Immigration policy is a federal responsibility, but states live with the reality of a broken system. With a new administration stepping into office next year, fears are spreading in the Elm City.

“I’ve heard from teachers who’ve said their children in schools are crying and worried because they’re afraid their parents will be taken from them,” Harp said.

According to ABC News, President Obama has deported 2.5 million people, more people than any other president.
