Officials identify man charged in Milford police stand-off

New Haven

A police investigation involving a barricaded man that closed a road and evacuated  homes in Milford on Monday morning has ended with the suspect in custody.

Milford police say that a stand-off has ended after 38-year-old Matthew Smith, who barricaded himself inside his home, was apprehended.

Officers have been on scene of the home for hours on Falmouth Street. That road was blocked off to both traffic and pedestrians between Old Point Road and Kittery Street since the early morning hours. However, it has since been reopened.

News 8 learned on scene that this incident started as a domestic complaint, where at around 3 a.m., a woman had went to the police and told them that her husband had beat her.

Police said the woman claimed Smith said he was going to “kill her, burn down her, burn down her family’s home, kill any future children she may have, [and] amongst other similar statements.”

When police went to check in with Smith at their home, they had some contact with him at first, but he then refused to come out and speak with police.

Police say that they were not sure if he was armed but knew that he has had trouble with the law before.

Officials used a drone to get a better look at the area/house in case the suspect did have weapons and also attempted to speak with him over a megaphone.

Police say that there was no one else inside of the house with the man and nearby homes were also evacuated.

Smith has been charged with disorderly conduct, assault, and other related charges.

He is being held on a $25,000 bond and will appear in court on Tuesday.
