Retired New Haven police captain still needs help collecting bikes for children in St. Maarten

New Haven

Retired New Haven Police Captain Patricia Helliger always went the extra mile to help people in need.

Now, she’s asking for your help to collect bikes for children in her native St. Maarten

News 8 first told you about Helliger’s effort back in April to help the island hard-hit by Hurricane Irma. She said bike donations have been slow and she’s going to need about 1,000 sets of wheels for the number of schools she’s sponsoring.

A couple bicycle shops have signed on to help restore the bikes, and some local students are stepping in too.
