Stolen car chase injures 6 in multi-vehicle crash in Hamden

A police pursuit of a stolen SUV ended in a crash involving three vehicles on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden early Tuesday morning.

The crash took place near Woodin Street around 2:15 a.m. Dixwell Avenue between 2nd Street and Putnam Avenue was closed for almost eight hours, reopening just before 10:30 a.m.

According to Connecticut State Police, 19-year-old Jonathan Garcia was driving a stolen SUV from New Britain on State Street in North Haven when he failed to stop at an intersection. North Haven officers went to pull Garcia over, who then attempted to flee. North Haven officers engaged in pursuit.

Garcia, with two passengers in the stolen SUV, continued into Hamden with North Haven officers in pursuit. The chase ended when Garcia crashed into a pickup truck and another SUV at the intersection of Dixwell Avenue and Woodin Street.

Between the three vehicles, six people were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Connecticut State Police report that five of the injuries were minor. One of the passengers in the stolen SUV, 25-year-old Andrew Basilici, of Hamden, sustained life-threatening injuries.

State Police have assumed the investigation. It is unclear if Hamden officers were involved in the pursuit. No charges have been filed.
