Surveillance shows West Haven soccer field vandalized

New Haven

Surveillance video shows a four-door pickup truck with overhead running lights and a utility box mounted in the bed driving on a West Haven field and tearing it up by doing doughnuts.

Then, the driver went right through the fence line.

The vandalism to the soccer field at Pagels Elementary happened early Sunday morning.

School Principal Gary Palermo said, “It was very upsetting to the boys and girls and the entire community.”

Yvonne Langley is the school nurse.

She said, “We could not believe it and we all were a little shocked.”

The vandal was captured on a neighbor’s camera destroying the field.

One man said, “It should be easy to find out who it is because he has to bring it somewhere to be fixed.
“It’s unfortunate. Kids need a place to play so when the big guys come and ruin it. Nothing better to do.”

Children use the field every day for recess. The West Haven Youth Soccer team plays there, as well as multiple men’s soccer leagues on the weekend.

Langley told News 8, “It’s sad that someone can do this and the kids look forward to coming out and playing.”

Palermo hopes the person responsible will turn themselves in.

Palermo added, “We hope whoever did the damage takes care of it or comes forward like we teach our boys and girls. It’s important to take responsibility for your actions.”

He said it is very upsetting to the boys and girls.

He added, “On a nice day like today, kids are out here playing kickball, soccer. We use it every single day. So we are really looking forward to tomorrow or the next day they will be out here again playing.”

Karen Lenois said, “It’s sad that someone would do something like that. It really is, because they look forward to time outside and with the weather the way it has been lately, they really haven’t been out that much.”
