NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — If you shop online this holiday season, you may want to be home on delivery day to prevent porch pirates from stealing your packages.

Some residents in the Wooster Square area of New Haven said they have had an increase in package thefts. Video obtained by News 8 appears to show two men in the neighborhood whisking several packages off someone’s doorstep.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA

Package thieves are known to troll neighborhoods looking for unattended packages, sometimes following delivery trucks and snatching packages before homeowners even realize they’ve been delivered.

Some people in the Wooster Square area have posted signs that read: “Do not leave packages on the front porch.”

One woman said most of her online orders had been stolen from her front steps in the past month.

“I order things from Amazon, and over the past month, we’ve probably had almost every package stolen,” she told News 8.

The woman said she’s now looking at alternatives to receive packages, like using a storage locker.

According to a recent report, 17% of Americans have had their packages stolen within the past three months.

News 8 has reached out to New Haven police for comment but have not yet heard back.
