3 arrests made in carjacking that sent 2 nearby Prospect schools into lock down

New Haven

PROSPECT, Conn. (WTNH)– Three people were arrested after a carjacking sent two nearby Prospect schools into lock down Thursday.

Long River Middle School and Prospect Elementary School were in a partial lock down (shelter in place) Thursday due to a police investigation underway in the area. As a precaution, there were armed security guards on site at the schools but school officials say that students and staff were not in danger.

The police activity began earlier Thursday, when troopers were dispatched to the reports of a car crash in the area of Radio Tower Road. Witnesses told them the occupants of the vehicle involved in that collision were observed fleeing the scene on foot.

Police say that the car was later determined to be stolen out of New Haven. Troopers and Prospect officers searched the area with K9 handlers.

According to police, Jahseim Cherry, 18, of New Haven, Ciera Leshay Jones-Whitfield, 21, of New Haven, and Nashaly Rodriguez-Roman, 20, of Waterbury were all taken into custody after being involved in the attempted theft of a vehicle while the driver was still inside.

Cherry was charged with larceny, robbery and interfering with officer/resisting. Jones-Whitfield was charged drug paraphernalia, larceny, robbery by carjacking and interfering with officer/resisting. Rodriguez-Roman was charged with larceny, robbery and interfering with an officer/resisting. They were each held on $50,000 bond.
