Victim identified after fatal hit-and-run on Route 63 in Bethany

New Haven

A fatal collision involving a pedestrian closed a route in Bethany on Sunday morning.

At approximately 7:33 a.m., Connecticut State Police responded to a call of a pedestrian struck on Route 63 near Grant Road.

Naugatuck police later confirmed that the collision was fatal.

Route 63 was blocked off in both directions before reopening.

“It’s a shame because whether it’s morning or night that road is ‘suicide alley,'” stated neighbor Frank Silva.

“It’s very concerning and it just makes you say ‘oh my God, if everyone would just slow down a little we might not have so many crashes,'” added Linda Silva.

State Police identified the deceased as 25-year-old Tony Pires Goncalves.

Police have described the evading vehicle as a green Jeep Grand Cherokee between the years 1997 and 2001 with damage to the front right end.

Anyone with information that might aid investigators in identifying the operator and/or evading vehicle is asked to contact Troop I in Bethany at 203-393-4200.
