Business owner devastated after 2nd alarm fire burns through Atlantic Building Products in East Lyme

New London

EAST LYME, Conn. (WTNH) — Crews battled a 2nd alarm fire at Atlantic Building Products (ABP) on Boston Post Road Saturday morning.

The owner of ABP tells us it’s been an emotional and devastating day. They built the company from the ground up about 10 years ago. He called it a real “Cinderella Story.”

The fire caused extensive damage to the building. In a video sent to us by a News 8 viewer, we’re told smoke and flames could be seen from miles away.

East Lyme’s fire marshal tells us the fire started around 11:30 a.m. Mutual aid was called in to help them battle those powerful flames.

The owner of ABP says two employees were in the business and managed to get out safely after they heard what sounded like a pop and then they saw the smoke.

There are other businesses attached to this commercial space: a flooring business and a Legends Alumni Livery Limited Limousine Service. Those we spoke to from the limo business say they are grateful for the firefighters.

Karen Brunelle of Legends said, “I feel really appreciative to the whole community coming together and do what they did.”

The state fire marshal is here assisting with the investigation. It’s unclear how or where the fire started. That’s what they’re working to figure out.

East Lyme Public Safety is asking the public to avoid the area.
