Online fundraiser nets nearly $450,000 for family of priest

NORWICH, Conn. (AP) – An online fundraiser for the family of a Greek orthodox priest killed in a car crash has netted nearly $450,000.

Matthew Baker died Sunday in Norwich. The 37-year-old priest took his first assignment at the Norwich parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston.

He was survived by his wife, Katherine, and six children ranging in age from 2 to 12. The children were with Baker in the crash and suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.

The Bulletin reports that the fundraising goal of $750,000 is expected to rise with donations. Contributions have come from 4,128 donors.

A wake is set for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Church in Norwich. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Cranston, Rhode Island.
