MYSTIC, Conn. (WTNH)– A young harbor seal was released back into the ocean Thursday after being rehabilitated at Mystic Aquarium.

The seal, named Snap Dragon, headed back out into the ocean at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, Rhode Island after spending four months rehabilitating at Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Clinic.

The aquarium says the seal was named for the snapdragon flower, which is known to symbolize graciousness and strength, qualities that were present in Snap Dragon, the seal.

Snap Dragon was rescued in Chatham, Massachusetts by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. He was then transferred to the aquarium on September 13th for treatment of a fractured flipper and multiple wounds. He also had rocks in his stomach.

Mystic Aquarium says that while Snap Dragon only weighed 37 pounds when he was admitted, he has gained about 8 pounds during his rehabilitation. This made him a healthy 45 pound, 8-month-old at the time of his release.
