Getting rid of unregistered guns is one goal for police departments around the state. Two gun buyback events held earlier Saturday were deemed successful.
Officials say they received 125 firearms. Two of those weapons were assault rifles.
“Thirty-eight thousand people a year are shot to death in this country. That’s 105 a day. If we can minimize the number of people that get shot today, tomorrow, throughout the year then the program is a success”, says Steve Yanovsky, Communications Director for the Newtown Foundation.
Hartford police also held its 10th annual event Saturday. It received 137 firearms – which more than doubles last year’s total of 68.
Anyone who turns in a gun during the events received a gift card. The amount of the gift card depended on what type of gun was turned in.
