State officials approve bill to give inmates free phone service

Connecticut

On Tuesday, a new push to keep inmates connected with family members was initiated and is said to cost the state millions in revenue.

According to the New Haven Register, the judiciary committee approved a bill on Tuesday that would provide inmates with free phone service.

Right now, inmates and families have to pay for service, which costs upwards of $4 dollars 15 minutes. State officials say the new rule will cause other criminal justice programs to lose $8 million in funding.

The bill now heads to the Full House and Senate.
