8 ducklings rescued from catch basin on UConn Storrs Campus

According to the University of Connecticut’s spokesperson, Stephanie Reitz, Sunday evening, UConn Fire Personnel were notified by numerous people on campus of a rescue for eight ducklings trapped in a confined space on North Eagleville Road near the Chemistry Building.

On arrival, according to the report, a mother duck and two of her young were calling for eight other ducklings stuck in a catch basin. Rescuers on the Fire Personnel enacted the confined space rescue protocol and lowered themselves into the basin via a ladder. According to the report, personnel rescued six ducklings first but had trouble rescuing the remaining two who swam into the drain tubing.

Crews reportedly used Rice Krispies to lure the remaining two ducklings out where they were successfully rescued.

All the ducklings were reunited with their mother and have been seen swimming around Swan Lake.
