COVENTRY, Conn. (WTNH) — The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is investigating after a man died when his car went into Coventry Lake on Wednesday.

Just after noon, officials said a car drove off the Coventry Lake Boat Launch and became submerged in the water.

The driver briefly came up to the surface of the water but quickly went back under and was not seen again.

CT DEEP Environmental Conservation Police, along with Coventry police, fire and EMS personnel, the Vernon Police Department, and the Connecticut State Police Dive Team responded the scene.

A Coventry Police officer went into the water in an attempt to find the driver, according to DEEP. That officer was unsuccessful.

Tolland County Dive Team also conducted a water search for the driver but was unable to locate him.

The State Police Dive Team recovered the body of 53-year-old Dieter Zumpe, of Ellington, just before 5 p.m. The car was removed as well.

It is unclear what caused the driver to drive off of the boat launch.
