One firefighter sent to the hospital as crews put out large blaze at Vernon home


VERNON, Conn. (WTNH) — Firefighters were dispatched to a large house fire on Talcott Ave. in Vernon Sunday night.

Vernon fire officials report they received a call for a structure fire around 5 p.m. Upon arrival, they could see flames extending from the third floor of a three-family house.

Roughly 50 firefighters were called to the scene. They were able to enter the building to fight the blaze, but were shortly pushed out due to heavy fire.

All residents made it safely out of the building and the Red Cross is on scene to help displaced families, as the house has been deemed uninhabitable.

In video sent from viewers, you can see the big flames and smoke coming out of the home at 92 Talcott Ave.

Fire officials report that one firefighter was taken to Hartford hospital with minor injuries, but he is expected to be okay.

As of 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Vernon fire crews were still putting out hot spots in the home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
