STORRS, Conn. (WTNH) — The hazmat incident that led to part of the UConn Storrs campus being evacuated Friday is under control, according to the university.

The incident happened at the Gant Science Complex. University spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said UConn emergency crews responded shortly after 4 p.m. to the complex.

The incident occurred when a person cleaning equipment in a lab inadvertently mixed two chemical substances, causing the container to rupture and create an odor, Reitz said.

The building was fully evacuated as a precaution. Reitz said one person was evaluated on site but no injuries were reported and the building did not sustain any damage.

The complex reopened around 6:30 p.m. except for the fourth floor, where UConn Environmental Health and Safety officials remained on-site to clean the lab.

The fourth floor reopened later Friday night but the lab will remain closed throughout the weekend.
