Two Connecticut competitors remaining in Scripps National Spelling Bee


Connecticut has two spellers remaining at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland.

Sixth grader Charles Fennell from Bloomfield is still competing, so is state spelling bee “Champ” Janelle Newell from Bridgeport, who is back at the bee for a second shot at the title.

“This year I spent a lot of time studying lists, studying root words…and I think it has helped me a lot,” Newell said.

Part one of the finals begins Thursday.
