One person has died after their car crashed into a tree and caught fire in Plainfield on Sunday night.

Connecticut State Police say just after 7:30 p.m., a car traveling on I-395 southbound, prior to exit 32, went off the right shoulder, overturned, hit a tree and then burst into flames.

The driver, who was the sole occupant, sustained fatal injuries. Police have not released their identity at this time.

Multiple fire departments responded to the scene and briefly closed the southbound lanes of the highway.

Police say once the fire was extinguished, the left lane was reopened but the right lane remained closed while the vehicle was removed from the side of the road.

The accident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to contact troopers at 860-779-4900.
