Creative Do-It-Yourself Mother’s Day gift ideas

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate and give back to the women in our lives who go above and beyond for others. Whether you already picked out a gift or not, we’ve got your back with some creative do-it-yourself Mother’s Day gift ideas.

Joining us on Good Morning Connecticut, blogger Charlotte Smith shares some great, fun ideas to create something Mom will love. As much as moms appreciate flowers and spas and brunches, sometimes the most memorable gift is one the kids can make themselves! Plus, you can get the children involved with these easy last minute Mother’s Day gifts.

  1. Chic and simple flower pots.  Swing by your local home improvement store and grab a terra cotta pot, painters tape, spray paint, and a plant.  Tape off a graphic pattern and spray paint. Remove the tape, pop a plant in and you’re done! For the cooking enthusiast, substitute a flowering plant for a kitchen herb garden.
  2. Easy stenciled canvas.  Start with a blank canvas or a scrap piece of wood. Using painter’s tape, tape off your design. You can make mom’s initials or a simple heart or even the phrase “I love you.” With your design taped off, go over with craft paint being sure to completely cover the canvas with color. Let the paint dry slightly, and remove the tape leaving behind your design.
  3. Thumbprint heart pins. This gift takes 30 minutes and requires Sculpey dough or some other variety of oven-bake clay.  Choose your colors and make a ball of clay the size of a large grape.  Using the bottom of a drinking glass, press your ball into a flattened circle. Make a heart imprint in the clay by pressing down two criss-crossing thumbprints. Bake at 275 °F for 15 minutes per 1/4 in thickness.  Once clay has cooled, use jewelry glue (like e6000) or a hot glue gun to adhere a pin.

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone!
