Ten students were arrested after a fight broke out at Ansonia High School on Wednesday morning.

A school spokesperson says that nine girls were involved in a fight that  broke out at around 7:10  a.m. outside of the cafeteria at Ansonia High School at 20 Pulaski Hwy. A 15-year-old boy was also arrested after allegedly verbally assaulting a teacher who told him to stop videotaping the fight.

Three 14-year-olds, two 15-year-olds, one 16-year-old and one 17-year-old, along with 19-year-old Emony Hamilton and 18-year-old Nychelle Hamilton were charged with assault in the third degree and breach of peace in the second degree. Emony and Nychelle Hamilton were released on promises to appear in court on June 8th.

Officials say the fight was a result of an ongoing problem between two groups of females. Authorities say the Ansonia Police Department has investigated three other incidents and have made nine other arrests since Feb., 2018 regarding this problem.

The school’s resource officer has also attempted to mediate the issue multiple times in the past by bringing the students together and speaking separately with parents.

“This type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said Superintendent of Ansonia Public School Carol Merlone. “We thank our SRO, our staff and Ansonia Police for their quick action in containing this situation.”

School officials say all of the students involved have been suspended from the school pending further investigation and that other disciplinary action may be considered.

There are no further details  at this time. The incident remains under investigation.
