Dozens of car break-ins reported in Waterbury

Crime

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH)–Surveillance cameras aren’t stopping a rash of car break-ins at a Waterbury commuter lot adjacent to the train station.

“All the break-ins have been by breaking a window with some type of object either rock or something of significant weight,” Deputy Chief of Police with the Waterbury Police Department Fred Spagnolo.

“There was a car that had a broken window down that area a couple of weeks ago too,” said commuter Matt Ryan.

“There have been numerous car breaks there over the past to eight weeks,” Spagnolo said. Locals say they’ve seen smashed windows. “I’ve seen the broken glass and the back windshield was broken,” added Ryan.

Police have intensified patrols in the commuter lot and the train station area. They say the thieves are targeting anything valuable. “It appears that car stereos were targeted, portable GPS devices were targeted,” Spagnolo added.

Locals who use the commuter lot are taking precautions. Sarah Valentine says, “I don’t park here at night. But [I would] definitely take out anything that looks tempting.”

“That could be change that you leave in your coffee cup holder in your car. It could be anything that appears to be a value,” Spagnolo said.
