Man involved in deadly East Haven crash now in police custody


EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–The man wanted in connection with a fatal car accident on Frontage Road in East Haven is currently in police custody.

23-year-old Johnassis Melendez is being held on criminal and motor vehicle charges. He is believed to be the driver of the car that crashed into a pole on Frontage Road near the I-95 Southbound exit ramp, heading towards New Haven.

27-year-old Gaitana Girgenti was killed in the crash. Another person was seriously injured, and was transported to the hospital.

According to police, Melendez fled when officers arrived on the scene. He was seen running past the Home Depot and into the wooded area between the Dunkin’ Donuts there and CarMax.
