PD: Store clerk killed in New Haven shooting

Crime

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Police tell News 8 Muhanad Jawad, 21, who is partial owner of the E&M Smoke Shop on Ferry Street, died after being shot Tuesday afternoon.

Just after 1:30 p.m., police responded to the shop at 545 Ferry Street on a report of a shooting. News 8 was there when the man’s mother showed up and was informed of her son’s death.

“I could see the fire in her eyes,” said a family friend who lives nearby that only identified himself as Felix. “The shaking. I’m feeling her pain. Everybody out here is feeling her pain.”

Police say the gunman is described as either a Hispanic or black man who was wearing a black shirt or hooded sweatshirt and dark pants at the time of the shooting. Police say they do not believe a robbery was the suspect’s motive, which means Jawad might have been targeted.

At the time of the initial investigation, police said a Honda CRV stolen from West Hartford with four people inside may have been involved. Police chased the vehicle to Quinnipiac Avenue, where it drove off the road and into a home. The three people inside the car were taken into custody. One other was thought to have jumped in the Quinnipiac River marsh, but was later found by police.

New Haven police later determined that the four people involved in car theft were not involved in the shooting, and that the two incidents are not related.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses and recovering surveillance videos. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (203)946-6304. Calls may be made anonymously.
