The woman who was wanted for ramming a police cruiser in Plymouth before engaging police in a pursuit Tuesday has been taken into custody in Hartford on Wednesday.

Police have identified her as 26-year-old Bernice Martinez.

According to the Plymouth Police Department, the incident began when officers received a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a 2014 Kia Sportage side-swiping another car on Tuesday at 12:37 p.m. on South Riverside Avenue.

At 12:46 p.m., police say they received another call reporting the same 2014 Kia Sportage from the previous accident was located at the Patco Convenience Store located on 131 Main Street in Terryville with the driver attempting to inflate a flat tire.

Police responded to the scene and located the vehicle and driver. After a brief investigation by the officer, an altercation ensued with the officer grabbing the woman’s arm. Police say the woman pulled herself away and allegedly attempted to flee to the Kia Sportage vehicle.

As seen in the video, the driver of the car struck a pickup truck, a concrete barrier, and a police cruiser several times before she escaped.

At one point, one of the officers pulled out a gun.
“They were able to get away from the vehicle. It was a dangerous situation however,” said Plymouth’s Asst. Chief Robert Wright.  “He was trying to get ahold of her and opened the door and started putting the car in reverse. So, he jumped out of the way.”

Police say the driver turned on Main Street and hit another police cruiser before a high-speed pursuit was in motion. The pursuit was brought to an end when conditions became too dangerous, according to the Plymouth police.

The Hartford Police Department located a 2014 Kia Sportage in Hartford after it was involved in a minor collision with a van. Officers say the driver abandoned the vehicle following the accident.

The Plymouth Police Department later identified Martinez as the suspect and issued an arrest warrant. She was later taken into custody by Hartford Police while they were investigating a domestic violence incident in Clay Arsenal neighborhood.
