NEW MILFORD, Conn. (AP) — The sister of a 13-year-old Connecticut girl who was raped and killed by a gang of eight people in 1997 is outraged that one of the people convicted in connection with the killing is getting released from prison.

Maryann Measles, a seventh-grader from New Milford, was getting ready to make statutory rape allegations against two men, who were 19 and 21, when she was kidnapped, beaten, gang raped and drowned in a lake by five men and three women.

One of those women, Maggie Mae Bennett, 40, is scheduled to be released Oct. 10 after serving 17 years of a 19-year sentence for conspiracy, according to a story published Thursday in The News-Times of Danbury .

Bennett is being released because of good behavior while behind bars.

Bennett “earned Risk Reduction Earned Credit for compliant behavior and positive program participation,” said Karen Martucci, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Correction.

That didn’t sit with Jennifer Johnson, Measles’ sister.

“Apparently, a killer can earn ‘good time’ in prison,” Johnson said. “Sickening.”

Bennett was angry that Measles had sex with Bennett’s boyfriend, A.J. Walter — the gang’s ring leader — who is serving a 60-year sentence, according to authorities.

Bennett is the first member of the gang to be released.

Bennett, who received the lightest sentence of the gang, testified in court in 2002 that she thought the plan was to intimidate Measles so she would not make statutory rape reports. Bennett testified she did not know that the gang planned to kill Measles.
