Cruisin’ Connecticut – Fishing for creatures that can change their sex

News

GUILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – Today, we’re Cruisin’ Connecticut to Guilford, taking you into the water to search for creatures that can change their sex based on their surroundings.

Have any guesses? You may have had some this summer… OYSTERS! As I learned from Guilford Shellfish Warden, Al Brown, most oysters change their sex for mating at least once during their lifetime.

The Guilford Shellfish commission makes it a priority to replenish the shellfish population after they’re harvested in the Long Island Sound:

We put 400,000 in, in the fall. Little tiny ones, and it takes about a year, year-and-a-half for them to grow, so you’re eating the ones we actually put in two years ago.

The average age of a clam is 33 years, if it isn’t harvested. The commission encourages families and kids to learn and enjoy the experience of shellfishing in Connecticut.

You can shellfish 365-days-a-year in the state, but you need a license. Here is a list of license cost and registration locations for each town on the shoreline.
