HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Two swimming areas remain closed Thursday after the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection issued their water quality report.

The two swimming areas that remain closed are Masahmoquet Brook State Park in Pomfret and Indian Well State Park in Shelton. Four swimming areas are also reopening after being closed Wednesday, including Silver Sands State Park in Milford, Gardner Lake State Park in Salem, Wharton Brook State Park in Wallingford, and Kettletown State Park in Southbury.

Samples are collected by DEEP staff and are analyzed at the Department of Public Health Lab.

Indicator bacteria are not disease causing pathogens, but are one of the tools used by public health and environmental protection authorities to evaluate the potential for contamination of waterbodies.

Local health departments are responsible for sampling municipal swimming areas.
