The New York City Health Department has been handing out grades to restaurants since 2011.
Those grades are based on the number of violations marked during a health department visit.
Common ones include keeping food at proper temperatures and kitchen cleanliness.
The marks alert customers to the level of food safety with the goal of motivating restaurant staff to improve food prep areas. a recent study from the CDC shows these grades have decreased the rate of food borne illness in nyc by 5% annually.
When compared to other parts of the state – which do not post their marks on windows.
Implementing a letter grade system is an easy and cheap way to encourage restaurants to create safe and enjoyable dining spaces. an a in the window won’t guarantee you a five star meal
But it probably means the food is being prepared in a safe manner.
