East Haven, Conn. (WTNH) – The East Haven police department is warning people in town to beware of people making phone calls looking for donations claiming to be with the police union.
Officials say the police union does conduct two legitimate fundraising drives. One is for an annual car show and another is for an upcoming comedy show, with all the money raised going to help support activities like local youth programs and the D.A.R.E. program. However, the department says several citizens have complained of receiving calls from people asking for causes that are not authorized by the department.
They include people claiming to be from the union and collecting for causes such as ‘the Chicago officers, ‘Special Olympics’ and ‘disabled children’. The union is emphasizing that those calls are not being made by fundraisers representing the union.
