Connecticut’s new “Kid Governor” sworn in

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — There was patriotic music, a celebration of democracy, and all the pomp and circumstance of an inauguration. It was all just a little smaller, however, because Connecticut’s pick for Kid Governor was sworn in today.

Two months ago, fifth graders from dozens of towns across the state chose among seven finalists in the state’s kid governor program.

“4,400 students this year registered to vote for the program, and we had a number of candidates for kid governor, and their job was to pick an issue that they care about, think of it, research a solution,” explained Sally Whipple, the Executive Director of the Old State House in Hartford, where the inauguration took place.Related Content: Connecticut elects Milford 5th grader new Governor

Jessica Brocksom is a fifth grader at J.F.K. Elementary School in Milford. She was elected Kid Governor on a platform of preventing animal cruelty. Now that she is about to take office, she is ready to implement her plan.

“First I want to start with going to my presentation so I can send it into schools for them to know what to do to help with stopping animal cruelty,” Brocksom explained.

Governor Jessica replaces Governor Elena, the first kid governor, who says she made progress on her platform of kindness. We asked her what her least favorite part of the job was

“Probably having to give it up. Yeah, that’s my least favorite part because it’s really fun,” said Tipton. However, she understands that the peaceful transition of power is crucial to our democracy. Her advice for the new governor is to be herself. Not that Governor Jessica needs advice. She was poised and professional two months ago. News8 asked if she’s gotten more comfortable with the media.

“No, because I’ve been the same comfortable the whole time,” said Brocksom.

Which is true, and she will only get more comfortable as she spends the next year touring schools and libraries and furthering her agenda on preventing animal cruelty.
