Ohio Governor John Kasich has passed House Bill 58, which will give Ohio schools resources to teach cursive handwriting.
According to the bill, the curriculum should be designed to enable students to print letters and words legibly by grade 3 and create readable documents in cursive by grade 5.
The curriculum is expected to be available to schools by July.
While the curriculum must be developed, it doesn’t necessarily have to be used.
An earlier version of the bill made cursive writing mandatory. That language was changed by the Senate to make it optional.
