Enfield Schools to Remove Armed Guards

Education

ENFIELD, Conn. – The board of education in Enfield has voted to remove all armed guards from the public schools in town.

In a 5-3 vote Tuesday night, the board opted to end a program that would have kept armed guards in the public schools for another two years.

On April 20, the town council had voted to continue the program. The board’s vote is the final say, though, so the program will be discontinued. It’s estimated it would have cost the district $782,800 to keep the program going for the 2015-2016 school year.

Armed guards had been put in the schools in response to the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The 21 guards currently in the public schools will keep their posts through the end of the school year. The Hartford Courant and Associated Press contributed to this report.
