Wallingford auditorium filled for meeting regarding potential school consolidation plans

Education

It was a sea of red at Lyman Hall High School on Monday night.

Nearly 200 teachers packed the auditorium wearing shirts that said “Red for ed.”

The fate of schools in the district is unknown. The town is considering some major changes to cut costs. That could mean merging the two middle schools or the two high schools into one.

Vanessa Mather is a fifth grade teacher. She also has two kids at Dag Middle School.

“I can’t support any plan that consolidates into one middle school. It’s just unprecedented for this size district, she said.

The president of the teachers union was also concerned one massive middle and high school would create class sizes entirely too large.

“Having these large schools, I think we’re going to lose that personal touch,” Louis Faeilla stated.

An option for no change to the schools is on the table.

The town also considering putting science, math, technology and engineering on one side of town and arts and communication on the other side.

Another proposal calls for Dag Middle School to become the central office, Moran Middle school would be for 5th and 6th graders, Sheehan for 7th and 8th graders and Lyman Hall for high schoolers.
