Plastic bags, straws ban approved by Stonington community

Environment

Stonington is the latest town to have a ban on single use plastic bags and plastic straws.

According to The Day, residents approved the plan during Thursday night’s town meeting.

Anyone that is involved with retail sales must now use reusable or resyclable paper bags for customers. In six months, no businesses can provide or sell single use plastic carry-out bags.

To encourage this status quo, violators of the ban will be notified and given 2 weeks to comply. Each subsequent violation attached with a $150 fine along with the potential for businsesses to not have their licenses renewed.

The report also states that a restuarant cannot offer a plastic straw unless asked by a customer.
