Events held across Connecticut Monday to honor veterans

Monday we remember and honor the men and women who have served our country. Towns and cities across the state are making sure they salute our veterans today.

It is such an important day to observe, reflect, and say thank you to those who have served our country. That’s why they’re hosting events in Windsor, Norwich, and New Britain Monday.

Over at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, students put their gratitude into action and filled up care packages with non-perishable foods and hygiene products.

Some will help a shelter for vets in Bridgeport.The rest will be shipped to troops who are serving right now.

Over in Guilford, dozens stood in the chilly fall air to reflect on the sacrifice military members make.

News 8 spoke with one Vietnam veteran who has spent 40 years helping vets by volunteering in Guilford. He says it’s important that others really try to comprehend the horrors of war.

“Sometimes I think the only people who understand is us combat veterans. I mean we’re the ones who have to fight those wars. We’re the ones who come back with the wounds that stay with us for all our lives,” said Larry Santamaria, Vietnam Veteran, Purple Heart. 

A big thank you to him, his family, and all other veterans today.
