Fairs and festivals aren’t letting Hermine threat ruin the busy holiday weekend

News

ORANGE, Conn. (WTNH) — As people eat and dance at the Greek Festival in Orange, Mother Nature is doing a dance of her own. What’s left of Tropical Storm Hermine is heading towards Connecticut.

Anthony Esposito is one of the Greek dancers.

“Rain or shine we are going to have the Greek Festival. I am not worried whatsoever,” said Esposito.

Every event is pretty much covered by a tent. There is a lot of worry about what’s going to happen when the winds blow through. They say they are professionally installed, complete with barrels of concrete used to anchor the tents. Dino Maniatis is cooking under one of the tents all weekend long and he says he feel safe.

“Hopefully we won’t have to worry about the winds. I know we are expected to get them, but we are going to shoot a little prayer to God, it is a church event and we’ll see where that gets us,” said Maniatis.

There are a lot of other fairs and festivals around the state that could be affected by Hermine:

Odyssey Greek Festival

Haddam Neck Fair

Woodstock Fair

Colebrook Fair

Goshen Fair

We are told everything is still on and that the fairs will make a day-to-day decision based on the track of the storm. Meanwhile, Father Peter Orfanakos says the Greek Festival has a back up plan.

“We have the indoor facilities to be able to house anyone who wants to come. People can take meals to go if they want, the dancers are still going to be able to dance,” said Orfanakos.

The Greek Festival runs through Monday rain or shine.
