Yale New Haven Hospital is collaborating with New Reach on the initiative. The focus is on turning lives around, like Yezenia Lebron, who was once homeless but is now a Peer Recovery Specialist for New Reach.
She talked about her worst times, before New Reach helped her turn her life around.
“By then I was almost already dead, I was weak, depressed and down to 94 pounds. People didn’t think I was going to make it and to be honest I didn’t even think I was going to make it because I was tired of fighting the fight,” said Lebron.
The hope is the initiative will save taxpayer dollars, because fewer homeless women will have to come to places like Yale New Haven Hospital in need of emergency services.
