Halloween spooks scare some from trick or treating

News

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — On Wednesday, Lena Rodriguez and her children were shopping for the perfect costumes. The family normally heads out to get candy in their hometown of West Haven, but this year they’re doing something different.

“This year with all the clown sightings it’s kind of frightened the kids and myself. You don’t know what to believe and what not to believe,” said Rodriguez.

Numerous creepy clown sightings and threats over the last several weeks are enough to keep her family from trick-or-treating.

“We’re gonna have an at home party. We’re gonna dress up, maybe go to a couple relatives’ house,” said Rodriguez.

Officers across the state are offering up advice to keep everyone safe on the streets this Halloween.

“Report anything that seems suspicious, out of the ordinary. We’re not just talking ghouls and goblins here, we’re talking about people who may look like they’re casing houses and things,” said Officer David Hartman with the New Haven Police Department.

Christina Partak and her two daughters had their own scare last year.

“We had a strange van that kept driving through the neighborhood, probably just a resident, but just being that it was Halloween and had gone by three or four times kind of made us a little bit nervous,” said Partak.

If you are heading out in search of candy this year, police are offering the following tips:

  • Always carry a flashlight.
  • Trick or treat in groups.
  • Do not let children go out alone.
  • Never enter someone’s home that you do not know.

Officers say it is also important to keep safety in mind when choosing a costume.

  • Wear bright colors.
  • Make sure the costume fits properly.
  • Wear glow in the dark make-up or reflective strips and jewelry.
