Hamden Mayor’s proposal to hire armed resource officers receives backlash

The town is considering adding armed school resource officers to its elementary schools.

Mayor Curt Leng likes the idea and says he’s ready to foot the bill for two new positions.

The officers would rotate through each of the town’s eight elementry schools.

The mayor said, “In this day in age you have to take every precaution possible.”

But, the idea is getting an icy reception from some parents and members of the Board of Education.

Walter Morton said,”That’s something we’re not interested in – we would rather go in a different direction. We’d rather have that money for behavioral support specialists, social workers, psychologist.”

Jen Pope said, “These are little kids and they don’t need to be policed. They need to feel like they’re in a warm and welcoming environment.”

Again, the idea is just a proposal at this point, but, if it gets the green light, those new resource officers could be in the schools by this fall.
