Yale doctor on the need for COVID boosters for adults 18+

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — With a rising trend of cases of COVID-19 infection and vaccine protection waning, there is a possibility that everyone aged 18 and over could be eligible for a booster shot by Thanksgiving.

“There have been numerous studies for Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson that show booster shots for all three are effective and safe and should be done,” Yale Medicine physician Sharon Stoll told News 8 Wednesday.

She points out the science on declining immunity.

“The information that we currently have shows a drop off in antibody level after the six-month mark,” explained Dr. Stoll.

She said we know that rate ranges for different age groups, with those 65 and over seeing lower protection levels first.

Monday, Pfizer asked the FDA once again to give emergency use authorization to booster shots for American adults 18 and older. The company pointed to new data showing a third shot increased protection against symptomatic disease to 95 percent across all age groups.

Dr. Stoll gave her take on the delay for giving boosters to everyone 18 and up: “We didn’t want a huge rush for booster clinics and we wanted those in our community most vulnerable to reinfection to get vaccinated first and I believe that has been done. And now to open it up to everyone is crucial.”

Sources tell ABC emergency-use authorization could possibly come before Thanksgiving.

“It will be very likely that everyone will be able to get a booster within a reasonable amount of time,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Chief Medical Advisor to the president

So far, the FDA does not have a meeting scheduled for that independent advisory committee as they did for other big decisions. That could mean the agency makes this expanded boosters decision without seeking external advice.
