Guidelines published this week by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends steps to help older adults avoid a potentially life-threatening fall.
They say that strength training is important for the geriatric population, especially in the lower body, as muscle loss accelerates after the age of 70.
Home safety is also important preventing falls.

According to the National Institute on Aging, six out of 10 falls happen at home.
To create a fall-free environment, make sure all areas of the home are well-lit.
Also, minimize clutter and secure or remove small area rugs that may be easy to trip over.
