Connecticut State Police have sent out a Facebook post on Thursday with important insight on recognizing suspicious packages and mail and what to do if you come into contact with one.

In being able to distinguish a suspicious package, the CT police say to be on the lookout for unusual labeling such as excessive postage, misspelling of common words, no return address or a strange return address.

Inappropriate appearances on a package such as powdery substance felt through the item, oily stains or discoloration on the exterior, strange odors, protruding wires, ticking sounds or exposed aluminum foil can be a sign of a suspicious package as well.

In the case of recognizing the odd package or sent mail, officials emphasize to remember to stay calm and do not open the item.

If possible, gently cover the letter using a trash can or item of clothing and shut off any fans or equipment that can circulate the material. Alert others nearby to relocate to an area away from the package.
