Hundreds of backpacks donated in News 8 Backpack Drive

MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– More students are heading back to school this week and with your help many are getting a jump start to the new school year with a new backpack and much needed school supplies.

Thanks to your generosity, 500 backpacks were donated to the News 8 “Back to School Backpack Drive” benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of New Haven and Milford. News 8 teamed up with the Connecticut Post Mall.

Our morning anchor team, Keith Kountz and Laura Hutchinson were there and so were Ryan Kristafer and Stephanie Simoni  greeting everybody who stopped by at the mall in Milford Sunday. It’s all about doing what we can to help boost a student’s success in the classroom.

Margaret Sunberg and granddaughter Mariah Martini wanted to make a difference.

“Mariah wants to give a book bag to the kids who need it. It was important to her because she likes to give to other children. She likes to make people happy she said,” said Margaret Sunberg.

“I think it’s really a good idea because a lot of kids can’t afford to go back to school. A lot of parents are tight at this time. It’s a great idea that we can get free book bags and free supplies for the kids because a lot of people need them,” said Amber Kania.

Pikachu, of Pokemon fame, made a guest appearance as well. Target and Costco both donated backpacks and supplies.

A big thank you to all who gave and for coming out to say hello. You’ve helped to make that first day of school, even more special for a lot of kids.
