Hundreds of coats collected at Fair Haven School

Some kids in the community will be able to have a warmer winter.

The largest elementary school in New Haven held a coat drive on Tuesday.

The Fair Haven School collected more than 300 coats and several items of winter clothing.

Teachers at the school said they worked hard to collect winter coats because children often come to school without appropriate winter clothing.

“It honestly warms my heart. As a teacher, I think I can speak for everyone. We go home at night and sometimes we lose sleep over things that happen at school. We worry about our kids, and I think that we can go home tonight happy knowing that we kept our kids warm,” explained kindergarten teacher Anna McCarthy.

Volunteers from local police and fire departments were at the school Tuesday morning to help pass out the coats.
