China making headway in growing the first plant on the moon

International

China says it’s making progress in trying to grow the first plant on the moon.

On Tuesday, Chinese State Media released pictures from its probe that landed there earlier in January.

The images reportedly show that cotton seeds placed inside the spacecraft have sprouted.

Officials say the seeds were watered only after the landing, so the sprouting happened on the moon.

The mission is testing whether plants can grow in a low-gravity environment.

Chinese scientists are also trying to grow rapeseed and potato seeds, and hatch fruit fly eggs.
