Lawmakers look to improve housing conditions for military families

Soldiers continue to face mold, vermin, foul smelling water, and, overall, poor living conditions. Not at a campsite in the field, but at home, in military housing.

Senator Mark Warner said military families deserve better.

He is co-sponsor of a bill that he says would increase accountability and speed up the repair process.

Military leaders admit they are partly to blame for this issue getting out of hand by failing to keep track of private housing contractors.

Robert McMahon with the Department of Defense said DOS has a plan of attack.

It’s working to provide legal protections to military families, and it’s making efforts to empower military families and improve customer service.

Warner said his bill, the Ensure Safe House for Our Military Act, would require DOD to create an electronic system to help make sure contractors are fixing problems, not wasting time or federal tax dollars.

Military leaders and lawmakers said they’re on a joint mission to ensure military families have safe, quality housing.
