(WTNH) — The UK-based National Cyber Security Centre recently published a list of the most-common passwords that have been hacked as a reminder to chose secure passwords to online accounts.
This list compiles simple words, phrases or a series of numbers that are easily cracked by hackers to gain access to secure accounts such as email, bank accounts and online profiles. That login data can then be exposed on the dark web through stolen databases.
The most common password? That goes to a series of numbers that 23.2 million people worldwide have used – simply: “123456”. Alternate combinations found “123123” to rank high in the ability to guess as well as “abc123”.
Names are also popular, whether that is the account-owner’s first name or a family-member’s with “ashley” topping the list of names followed by “michael”, “daniel” and “jessica”.
Musicians are also a category where memorable passwords can stem from. The band “blink182” led as the most-used password with “50cent”, “eminem” and “metallica” trailing behind the popular rock band as ways to log-in to online accounts.

Dr Ian Levy, NCSC Technical Director, said: “Using hard-to-guess passwords is a strong first step and we recommend combining three random but memorable words. Be creative and use words memorable to you, so people can’t guess your password.”
It’s also adviseable to change your passwords regularly and use a combination of letter, numbers and symbols to strengthen the security.
