According to officials, Route 44 was closed at the Rhode Island state line because of a four-vehicle crash.
Authorities said 23-year-old Scott Peterson of Greenville, R.I. was operating his vehicle while under the influence and caused the crash.
Six people were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.
Peterson was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to drive in proper lane.
The roadway reopened around 2:00 p.m.
