Mystic Aquarium releases ‘Gilbert’ back into the ocean ahead of holidays

Just before the holidays, the Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program celebrated early at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, Rhode Island by releasing a young harbor seal named ‘Gilbert’.

Gilbert was originally found in Castine, Maine, but the rescue group Marine Mammals of Maine. He was brought to Mystic Aquarium in early June. According to Aquarium officials, Gilbert was estimated to be only a month old at the time of his rescue. He required around-the-clock care for the first several weeks; which included formula feeds every three hours, weekly exams, and a daily checkups.

Gilbert also required treatment for malnourishment and a corneal ulcer during his rehab. When he was released Thursday, Gilbert now weighed a healthy 60 pounds. Scientists said he is now prepared for life at sea.
